An April 6 Hechinger Report article noted that the 2020 job market is shaping up to become one of the worst in recent memory for new college graduates.
Before the COVID-19 pandemic struck, seniors at four-year colleges had looked forward to graduating into a strong market, but now economists are predicting that unemployment could rise as high as 20 percent in the months to come.
Hechinger quoted JFF CEO Maria Flynn as saying she was troubled by the terrifying job market turnaround. “Three weeks ago,” she said, “most places we were dealing with had unprecedented labor shortages,” with discussions centering on a skills gap.
“This shift is causing everyone to grasp onto their new reality,” she added, noting that experts are predicting new demand for people with expertise in very specific areas, such as distance learning, IT, and health care.
