JFF CEO Maria Flynn in “A Handful of Colleges Are Finally Providing Training in a Way Consumers Want It: Fast”

As a nation we just do not have the career navigation tools that learners and workers need.

JFF CEO Maria Flynn was quoted in a Hechinger Report article about colleges that are offering learners short-term training opportunities on flexible schedules.

“As a nation we just do not have the career navigation tools that learners and workers need,” she is quoted as saying. “We don’t have a great transparent system to help people truly understand what their options are and what the training requirements are that are aligned with those options.”

Short-term postsecondary credentialing programs represent an effective way for workers and learners of all backgrounds to build the skills they need to enter rewarding careers and achieve financial security in today’s rapidly changing economy. But it can be difficult to assess the quality of these programs. In response to demand from students and employers—and in an effort to address policymakers’ questions about the merits of expanding federal financial aid plans to cover short-term training programs—JFF offers practitioner-informed considerations, rooted in a commitment to equity, that federal and state officials can use as a guide as they contemplate steps to support the expansion of high-quality short-term training programs.

In order to reimagine the way workers attain new skills, we first need to fundamentally change the way that we train America.
