In this report for the New Commission on the Skills of the American Workforce, Ray Uhalde and Jeff Strohl ask what it would take for the United States to maintain and even improve its standard of living in the decades ahead. They organize their response around two actions they believe are necessary to maintaining a high-growth, high-wage, high-employment economy:

  • Improving our educational attainment and quality; and
  • Nurturing and unleashing our innovation capabilities.

Uhalde and Strohl review the literature in the field, prepare original empirical estimates on the skills that employers value in the marketplace, and recommend both supply-side and demand-side strategies for regional economic growth and opportunity.
