These trend studies, prepared by the National Center on Education and the Economy (NCEE) describe market dynamics as they relate to seven specific industries, how U.S. states and firms are responding to these dynamics, how U.S. employment is being impacted, and where these industries may be headed.

The studies cover the following industries:

  • Auto;
  • Biotech;
  • Clinical research;
  • Health care;
  • Personal computers;
  • Software; and
  • Telecommunications.

These studies have helped inform the Regional Growth and Opportunity Initiative in which JFF, with support from the U.S. Department of Labor, the Mott Foundation, and the Walmart Foundation, is collaborating with the Council on Competitiveness and FutureWorks to examine what’s working in regional growth efforts—and what’s getting in the way of them. JFF and its partners are looking in depth at the kinds of partnership structures regions are putting in place, where leadership is coming from, and how workforce issues are being addressed in the context of regional growth strategies and regional partnerships.

In 2009, NCEE’s Workforce Development Strategies Group the author of these studies) became part of JFF, which has continued the work.
